Please, tell us something about yourself and your beautiful shop.
"Once upon a time..." eh eh, I would love to be a fairy tale character but for the moment being, I make up only tales for my little jewels... :-)
My name is Ilaria and I'm a jewellery designer. I've a passion for reading, I'm a curious explorer of the world and I usually get lost into antiques markets.I'm good at following my nose, I look like Snowhite and I like eccentrical accessories. (I'm sure my position is clearer now) :-)
I'm so happy and so hounored to be hosted by these "sweet as a candy" pages and to have the possibility to show you my new Raso collection: "The box in the attic". This collection is fully designed with two principal materials, raso and leather, but, in my shop you can find lots of creations in other materials, such as feltro or precious material such as silver. That's because this is the first time I have proposed an entire collection because, in the past, I preferred to create following my temporary inspiration...
Ilaria, raccontaci qualcosa su di te e sul tuo bel negozio.
"C'era una volta..." eh eh, mi piacerebbe essere un personaggio di una favola ma per ora mi limito a creare piccole storie con protagonisti i miei gioiellini.. :-)
Mi chiamo Ilaria e sono una designer di gioielli. Sono un'appassionata lettrice, una curiosa esploratrice del mondo e mi perdo nei mercatini dell'antiquariato. Ho il fiuto di un segugio, assomiglio a Biancaneve e mi piacciono gli accessori eccentrici. (Ecco così forse sono più chiara)
Sono stra contenta e stra onorata di essere ospitata in queste belle pagine davvero "sweet as a candy" e per potervi presentare la mia nuova collezione Raso "Il Baule in Soffitta". Questa collezione è interamente costruita intorno a due materiali principali, il raso e la pelle, ma nel mio negozio potrete trovare anche creazioni con altri materiali, sia meno preziosi come il feltro, sia molto più preziosi come l'argento. Questo perchè fino ad ora non mi ero mai focalizzata nel creare una vera e propria collezione, ma preferivo creare seguendo l'ispirazione momentanea...
How did you get started making these cute jewels?
It's hard to explain how I get started, sometimes it's difficult to find the start of the thread in the ball and changes are blurred in life. I can start in this way: when I was a child I dreamed to be a fashion designer... I still have many sheets of paper with dresses ans sketches of models drawn on them, 'cause I thought real stilists used to do like that.. :-) I 've been always interested in artistic studies and that's why I got a degree in Venice in Visual Arts and Theatre, mostly studying contemporary art, stage direction and set design. I was convinced I would work in a theatre in my life... but it is in Venice that I discovered pearls, minutia but most of all.. big windows with bowl of venetian murrine! It has been easy to start putting them together and to create little jewels.. That's why when I came back to Tuscany I changed the course of my studies and I started learning goldsmith's art in Florence that I went further with a Stone setting course and then with a Master in Jewellery Design in Milan.
In a word, it has been a long way always characterized by a passion of "making things", because I can't stop my hands from doing things and I'm always enchanted by the material itself. It can be fool to say but when I'm filing a piece of silver I think I'm relating with it, I try to make it more similar to me, I brush it and I make it in the shape I have in my mind. When I fold the ribbon I feel like I'm giving it life, making it dance... I have a direct connection with the things I create and that's maybe why, even if I started by chance, I never stopped. Mine is a creative need.
Come hai inziato a creare questi adorabili gioielli?
E' davvero difficile spiegare come ho iniziato, a volte i passaggi della vita sono talmente sfumati chesi ha difficoltà nel trovare l'inizio del gomitolo. Diciamo così: da piccola sognavo di fare la stilista... Fogli e fogli, che ancora conservo, con disegni di abiti e modelle abbozzate, perchè mi sembrava ceh i veri stilisti facessero così. :-) Gli studi artistici mi sono sempre interessati molto e infatti mi sono laureata a Venezia in Arti visive e dello spettacolo, studiando principalmente Arte contemporanea, regia e scenografia teatrale. Ero convinta che nella mia vita avrei fatto teatro... ma è proprio in questa città, Venezia, che ho scoperto perle e perline, minuterie, ma sopratutto... grandi vetrine e banchetti con ciotole piene di murrine veneziane! E' stato naturale cominciare ad assemblarle, creare piccoli ornamenti... Tornata verso casa, in toscana, ho dato una virata ai miei studi e mi sono iscritta ad un corso di oreficeria a Firenze che poi ho approfondito con un corso di incassatura di pietre preziose e con un master in design del Gioiello a Milano.
Insomma una lunga strada, caratterizzata da un grande passione per il "fare", per il non poter star ferma con le mani e un grande incantamento di fronte al materiale stesso. Sembrerà pazzo dirlo, ma quando limo un pezzo d'argento, mi sembra quasi di stabilire un contatto, di renderlo più simile a me, di accarezzarlo facendogli prendere forma. Quando piego il raso, mi sembra di renderlo vivo, farlo ballare... ho un rapporto diretto con quello che creo e forse è per questo che, anche se ho iniziato per caso, non ho più smesso. La mia è un'esigenza creativa.
What inspires you?
First of all, from the material itself, expecially from having it on my hands and touching it. I use this method both because it is a personal inclination and a personal curiosity and methodology, both because this is a thing I learned during the goldsmith's classes: they invited me to try, experiment new movements and settings, first with a prototipe and then with the real object. It may seem a loss of time but it is useful for me 'cause in this way I always find new little worlds, never expected.
Another big inspiration are shapes and chromatic combinations that I find in life. I fixed them in mind and later I try to reproduce them, making them mine. I'm usually struck by soft shapes, curves, waves, by everything is sinouos and linear. And then, a great must: asymmetries.
Da cosa prendi ispirazione?
Prima di tutto dal materiale stesso, dal contatto, dal tenerlo in mano. Questo è un metodo che deriva sia dalla mia inclinazione personale, dalla curiosità e dalla mia personale metodocità, sia dal metodo lavorativo che mi hanno insegnato alla scuola orafa: provare, sperimentare i movimenti e gli incastri, prima con un prototipo e poi con l'oggetto vero. Può sembrare una perdita di tempo ma per me è veramente un metodo che mi apre ogni volta nuovi mondi che non pensavo potessero esistere.
Altra grandissima ispirazione sono le forme e gli accostamenti cromatici che via via, nella vita, mi colpiscono. Mi rimangono impresse nella mente e poi cerco di riprodurle, facendole mie. In generale rimango molto colpita dalle cose morbide, dalle curve, dalle onde, da ciò che sinuoso e lineare. E poi, grande must: le asimmetrie.
Any advice for friends who are wanting to start their own shop?
Believe in yourselves! It may be trivial to say and it's true that the area of the female accessories is vaste and maybe it's not so easy to be original and I think it's normal to try to make easy pieces at the start, and it's easy most of them look like one or another.. But don't give up. Once you' ll learn basic thecniques you'll try new combinations and you'll find your way. Be yourselves.
There are many online shops: many are famous ones like Ebay and Etsy but there are also new ones like Artesanum and Misshobby. Choose the one you like most but be carefull at shop policies and possible percentage from the total of the order that the site will keep. Show your product with honesty and with all the information needed and try to take good pictures.. the visual impact will be the first thing your customer will notice. Unfortunatly it's not so common in Italy to shop online and it's up to us, thanks to the quality of our creations, to reassure and inject trust about shopping online in our customers.
Another thing is... be patient... results will come with time. The'll come, they'll come, eh!
Last but not least: who starts and who's not so expert in the online world maybe doesn't know that the web is full of delicious creative people, new virtual friends that will become a big surprise because they are so helpful and wonderful supporters! I thank them all, including you Federica, because you are a big source for my daily smiles and because it's so good to feel a part of a creative turmoil and attention also for beautiful, little things!
Hai dei consigli preziosi per chi come te vorrebbe aprire un proprio negozio?
Credete in voi! può essere banale ed è vero, l'ambito dell'accessorio femminile è molto vasto e forse non è così facile essere originali e credo che sia anche normale all'inizio, cercare di fare cose semplici che si assomigliano fra loro... Non disperate. Una volta imparate le basi, proverete nuovi accostamenti e troverete la vostra strada. Esprimete voi stesse.
Esistono varie piattaforme di negozi online. Ce ne sono di molto famosi come Etsy e Ebay ma anche nuove piattaforme come Artesanum e Misshobby. Scegliete quello che vi piace di più ma state attente alle condizioni di vendita e all'eventuale percentuale sulla vendita che il sito si riserva. Cercate di presentare il vostro prodotto con sincerità e completezza d'informazioni e curate molto le vostre foto... l'impatto visivo sarà la prima cosa che il vostro cliente noterà. Purtroppo, non è ancora così comune in Italia l'acquisto online e tocca a noi, grazie alla qualità dei nostri prodotti, rassicurare e infondere chiarezza e fiducia nei nostri clienti. E poi pazienza... i risultati arrivano col tempo! Però arrivano eh...
Ed infine, ma non meno importante: chi si avvicina a questo mondo forse ancora non lo sa... ma grazie alla rete può trovare altre creative, delle nuove amiche virtuali e non, che saranno davvero una sorpresa in quanto a disponibilità e sostegno! Io le ringrazio tutte, te compresa Federica, perchè siete una grande risorsa per i sorrisi giornalieri e perchè è bello sentirsi parte di un grande fermento creativo e di attenzione per le belle e anche piccole cose!
